"The Regulator," Five Months After Publication

Your humble author, outside a home straight from The Regulator era

The Regulator has been published and on sale for five months now, and things have been going strong - sometimes stronger than I wish they would. For, right when I feel that I'm done with it, that it's time to put this 25-plus year passion project away in my memory vault, someone else expresses interest in reading it. Or I find some more copies are being sold. Or I read a good review someone has left. And that's when I'm jolted with a fresh rush of energy and a renewed passion for my debut novel.

I call it my debut novel, because there's another novel I've been working on for some time now. In truth, The Regulator had already been written for a while before it saw publication. Query letters, promising rejections, not so promising rejections, and endless revisions were part of life for a long time before the book went on sale. Perhaps that's why my passion has yet to die out - because, man, I've put a ton into this.

With all that in mind, the book is selling well. Very well. According to the research I've been doing, The Regulator may actually end up in the top 1% for first year sales for independently published works on Amazon.  That's a development I didn't see coming. Needless to say, it will be quite a thrill if I reach that goal. Even if The Regulator doesn't ultimately end up in such rarefied air, it's nice to know people like it. The reviews have been great, and people have been regularly sending in pics of themselves reading it. Good stuff all around. Thanks to all you who have given it a read.

As for those of you who haven't picked it up yet - The Regulator is easily priced and on sale at Amazon (I've provided a link). It's a pretty good book, if I do say so myself. What's more, as one reviewer put it, the historical issues the novel deals with resonate today. Long story short: I'm passionate enough about the work to keep promoting it almost half a year after it was first published - so passionate, my wife and I just revisited the Deerfield, Massachusetts green where some of the action takes place. Needless to say, this is a novel for everyone, but especially for those interested in historical fiction and literary fiction. If author's like Hemingway, McCarthy, and Tolstoy are up your alley, then this is the book for you. Of course I'm not am imitator, but a writer in full possession of his own voice. In other words, you won't be reading a rip off of a famous author, you'll be reading something completely unique.

How History And Imagination Collide In "The Regulator"

Hey Gang. First off, I just wanted to let you know that The Regulator is rapidly on it's way to being ready for publication. The manuscript has been set in book form, and the jacket art is in the process of being designed. Although no launch date has  been set, the novel will be available as both a hard copy and as an e-book. The choice will be yours as to how you want to read it. Right now the entire endeavor seems to be running on intense pressure and high energy, but the result will be impressive. Expect the launch date to be announced soon.  

Now, what's interesting about novels like The Regulator is that they're set in reality while still remaining very much works of fiction. For instance, John, the hero (Or is it anti-hero?) of my novel, emerged from my own imagination and personal experiences. The world he exists in, however, the world of Shay's Rebellion, is a very authentic and frightening part of American history. 

The truth is I believe all of humanity, both past and present, contains certain traits. We all know what it means to be angry, happy, excited, jealous, even frightened. Those are things that aren't unique to people of certain places, races, or time periods. They're things that unify us. That's why I felt comfortable putting so much of myself into John, an 18th century soldier, even though I have no military experience of my own to speak of. 

Still, history can't be denied. Authenticity is important, and I strained myself to attain a high level of authenticity in this work. Real people and real places are involved in the narrative. One such real person is Luke Day, of West Springfield, Massachusetts. Day came from a wealthy family, fought as an officer in the American Revolution, then lost his fortune before becoming one of the leading figures of Shay's Rebellion. His house in West Springfield still stands. You can see what it looks like above. The home is also the setting of an important chapter of The Regulator. You don't see many structures like this around anymore, so it's a pleasure to know this piece of history is being preserved. 

Below you will see what  the view is like about five minutes away from the Day home, in the city of Springfield, where Shay's Rebellion reached its bloody climax. Architecture changes, but humanity essentially remains the same. 

The Regulator Is Coming

Every writer's dream is to be a novelist.

Okay, that may be a generalization, but I very much doubt it's a gross generalization.

Needless to say, I've been a writer for decades, and I've long dreamed of having a novel published.

Now I'm happy to say that dream is about to become a reality - for my book, The Regulator, is currently in the throes of the publication process.

At  present time, my goal is to keep all of you up to date on the novel's progress as it makes the journey from manuscript to finished product.

Things are moving fast, but I'll be keeping everyone abreast.

In the meantime, I'll leave you with details of what The Regulator is actually about.

Synopsis

The Regulator takes place during Shay's Rebellion, the bloody and explosive incident which shook a young America to its marrow. John, an American Revolutionary War vet, returns to his farm in Western Massachusetts only to learn that a new conflict is brewing. Indeed, farmers like John are losing their property and even their freedom due to the depression that's arrived in the wake of war. While John is temped into taking up arms against the powers that be, his wife, Deborah, senses her husband is being driven by more than just a sense of duty, that a deep secret may be leading the family to destruction.
